Lake Ashi, also known as Ashinoko or Lake Hakone, is a crater lake in the Hakone area. It is famous for its views of Mt. Fuji, though they are frequently obscured by clouds. Even so, the area has plenty to offer, including hot springs resulting from the natural volcanic activity of Mt. Hakone, whimsical pleasure boats that operate year-round, beautiful shrines, and the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway.
There are many hiking trails and resorts. Close to Tokyo, Lake Ashi is a popular destination for day trips. Try to go on a weekday to avoid huge crowds and long delays in traffic. Lake Ashi can be reached from several directions. From Tokyo, the easiest way is to take the train to Odawara Station, then transfer to a bus.
