In the underwater section of the Mermaid Lagoon at Tokyo Disney Sea you will see the wooden hull of a sunken ship, which is the setting of the show, “Under the Sea.” Though it can loosely be described as a musical, this performance needs to be seen to be believed. Live actors, animatronics, and huge puppets with black-clad puppeteers do a spectacular acrobatics and dance show on the stage and in the air, suspended by wires so they appear to be swimming above the audience. It is set to pre-recorded music from the movie, The Little Mermaid, and recreates scenes with Ariel and her friends battling the witch Ursula in a story about courage and friendship.
The 14-minute show is in Japanese, but there is a captioning system available in English which you can get if you ask a staff member. Especially for someone familiar with the movie, this is probably not needed to enjoy the incredible performance. The theater is circular with a center stage, but most of the action takes place above the audience, so there are no bad seats. Even though 700 people can watch at the same time, lines tend to be very long, but this highly recommended show is worth the wait. All ages can enjoy it, from little children who like the charming characters to adults marveling at the aerial feats. No photos or videos are permitted in the theater.
