Across the water from the Arabian Coast you will find in Tokyo DisneySea the Mermaid Lagoon, inspired by the movie, The Little Mermaid. This theme area was clearly designed for small children, with simple carnival-style rides that have no surprises or scary parts. Parents and older siblings might want to watch such attractions as Jumpin’ Jellyfish, which is like rising and falling in an elevator, while little ones go on the ride. There is even a play area, Ariel’s Playground, which is perfect for children to explore and burn of excess energy from waiting in lines.
There are two sections to Mermaid Lagoon. One is outside, with two rides and a place to meet and have photographs taken with Ariel, the little mermaid. The area is designed like a big coral reef with flowing patterns of seashells and kelp. If you have a chance, visit at night when it is illuminated. The beautiful display changes with undulating, magical lights.
The interior part is called Triton’s Kingdom. All of the decor is in keeping with the theme, from the whale-shaped gift shop to the patterning on the ceiling. The flowing lines of kelp and shells continue, and the lighting enhances the underwater effects. Triton’s Kingdom is like a miniature theme park in itself, with charming rides, shops, and a restaurant.
There is even one live show, which is held in the Mermaid Lagoon Theater. Performed in the round, actors and puppets dance over the audience in a spectacular aerial show that makes them seem like they are swimming underwater. This sophisticated show is highly recommended and appeals to all ages. So take the whole family to enjoy some time in the Mermaid Lagoon!
