Many people arrive in Kuching on the weekend for a chance to browse for a bargain or two in the large and vibrant weekend market. Known as Pasar Minggu in the Malay language, this is a good place to witness traditional Malay life as everyone from the surrounding area turns up to buy, sell and trade goods.The Sunday Market sells all manner of souvenirs, trinkets and even toys as well as fruit, vegetables and clothing. Located at Satok the Sunday Market is a huge traditional shopping experience and is like an aircraft hanger full of Asian splendor. It's a great place to buy souvenirs as well as produce, fruit, toys and clothing. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
The newly opened Spring Shopping Mall is located at Jalan Simpang Tiga, located between the airport and city center. Truly international with Elle, Mango, Espirit and Starbucks, the center also features excellent underground parking and MBO cinemas.
Boulevard Mall opened in 2007 and is located at Mile 4 Kuching-Serian Road. It has a lot of outlets including Sony, Boulevard Hypermarket, and department stores. It also offers bookstores and an excellent food court.
The best bargains can be found at Satok Weekend Market, which starts on Saturday afternoon and continues until Sunday. Bartering is common practice at this and other markets and those who are persistent should be able to get big discounts on the starting prices of goods.
