Great Walks in Chiang Mai

Discovering the ancient city by foot.

Great Walks in Chiang Mai

Thailand has become one of the most popular tourist destinations around. The great currency conversion from the pound and its endless party atmosphere has seen it transform into a backpacker’s paradise. Thousands of pre and post graduates make the pilgrimage each year to do the famous well-trodden, South East Asian loop. Surprisingly to some, however, Thailand does still hold some incredible experiences away from the bars and dubiously docile tigers. As we learnt from The Hangover, Bangkok is a cruel mistress; a few nights in the city and you could be lost forever. A trip to northern Thailand offers a different take on the country and encapsulates the pure and real beauty of the country.

Cut into the gorgeous foothills of Doi Suthep is the enchanting city of Chiang Mai. This ancient city is home to hundreds of beautiful designed temples which pierce through the city’s skyline. The background of the stunning mountain ranges give off an incredible atmosphere and sense of mystery.  Despite the modernisation of the city and the increasing population, Chiang Mai has managed to hold on to many of its attractive charms. The laid back way of life still rules, while the majority of its Thai customs and cultures remain intact. Of course, the influx of nightclubs and bars has reached this far north, however, the beauty of Chiang Mai lies in its fantastic location. One of the best ways to see any destination is to pull on your hiking boots and get out there along some walking trails. There are plenty of fantastic walks and hikes in the Chiang Mai, so while young backpackers are still passed out in their hostels, get out there and explore Thailand’s natural beauty. The great range of walks in Chiang Mai stretches from historic inner city strolls to epic hikes through the rainforests for those looking for adventure.

A trip to Chiang Mai isn’t complete without a visit to Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. The beautiful park surrounds the 1,676m mountain, Doi Suthep, which was named after a hermit called Sudeva who lived on the mountain for years. Near the summit lies one of the country’s most sacred temples, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, built in 1383. A fantastic hike is in store for those who venture to the top. The stunning lush green foothills of the mountain are only surpassed in beauty by the terrific views from the summit.

The park hosts some extensive hiking trails which often lead to spectacular hilltop views and great picnic areas. One of the most popular stop offs while heading up to the summit is Tok Monthathon. Just 2.5km off the main track, you will come across a beautiful natural pool with stunning waterfalls surrounding it. It acts as the perfect place to cool off from the humidity on your day out walking. Plenty of other trails are on offer throughout the park from walks through coffee plantations to trails passing through ancient villages, where a visit from foreign travellers is very rare.

For those looking for a walk that is a little less intense, there are some great routes and tours around the ancient city. Following one of these trails is a fantastic way to see the city and really allows for a total submersion in the local culture and atmosphere. The best way to discover the secrets of any place is to speak with the locals. Walking around the old town will give you a unique opportunity to chat with the owners of market stalls; let them be your guide around the best parts of the city.

Old Town is surrounded by a city moat which was built as a deterrent to the armies of Burma and the Mongol Empire, considered a constant threat during the city’s development. Today, the moat acts as a great way to circuit the city, absorbing the different areas and traditions of Old Town. During a lap of the moat, enter the city through the famous Thapae Gate, the traditional main entrance to the city and a great place to start exploring. A walk down Thapae Road will take you past the age old Buddist temples of Wat Bupparam and Wat Mahawan. These two glorious temples are two of the oldest and most significant in the city. Inside, you can discover the history and traditions held by the community.

Chiang Mai’s amazing markets are not to be missed. The sheer abundance of stalls, colours, smells and unique items for sale make the markets here something really special. Given the size of the city, there are plenty of markets to choose, from beautifully coloured flower markets, rich smelling food markets to interesting handicraft markets which can be found all over town. If you are out adventuring on a night walk, you can’t miss Chiang Mai’s famous night bazaar. This enormous market sprawls across several blocks, overflowing onto sidewalks, squares and even inside temple grounds. Mainly located on the Chan Klan road, the bazaar is well known for its craft items and amazing local paintings; it’s certainly worth a look to find some authentic Thai souvenirs.
