Regardless of how long I’ve spent living in Thailand or travelling around the country, I’ve found that this country always has the capacity to throw up hidden gems in the unlikeliest of places. Next week I will be publishing a full review of the new restaurant and bar, Mixology Chiang Mai, which opened recently and serves this particular cocktail, but for now here’s a little teaser . . .
And this is how the owners describe the drink on their menu:
P[r]ick me up
Tom yum infused Vodka, coconut liqueur, palm sugar, lime and chilli. ‘Prick’ means chilli which is the symbol of hot and spicy. This glass gives you the original Thai taste and makes you become a prick . . . oops . . . a Hot Girl or Guy.
The Thai mixolgist who created this cocktail trained at a bar-tending school in in London, speaks perfect English and this is his signature cocktail. There are definite similarities with the Siam Sunray cocktail that was launched some years ago, but this is an original creation. If vodka doesn’t do it for you, check out the extensive list of other cocktails, mocktails, wine and beer on the menu. It would be fair to say I’ve had the good fortune to sample a few drinks from various places around the world during my travels, but it’s not often a drink has made me say ‘Wow!’. This cocktail was that good and at 180 Baht was worth every single satang. I’ve been in a few times now to sample different dishes so I can put together a review and the clientèle has been almost exclusively Thai which I always take to be a good sign that the owners are doing something right. Highly recommended.
