Another day, another festival. Even when you live in Thailand it can be difficult to keep up with all the various local events going on in different provinces. This year, Chiang Mai has launched the International Lantern Festival which began on August 21 and goes through until August 29. Not to be confused with the famous Yi Peng Lantern Festival that takes place in November, this new event aims to promote tourism to Chiang Mai during the low season, particularly to visitors from other ASEAN countries such as China, Singapore and Malaysia. Giant lanterns have been placed at various locations around the moat that rings Chiang Mai’s old town area with the main focus for the event at Thapae Gate.
