In Thailand, May 5 is a public holiday to commemorate Coronation Day, known in Thai as Wan Chatramongkhol.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej came to the throne in June 1946 following the death of his brother. However, the king was only 18 at the time and it was decided that the new monarch should complete his studies before the formal coronation ceremony which took place on May 5, 1950. The ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty, His Majesty has the title of King Rama IX and is the world’s longest reigning living monarch.
