Wendy Guest House is a budget hotel located in central Bangkok a few minutes’ walk from the Skytrain (National Stadium station). It’s also very convenient for a number of other Bangkok transport options and with rooms starting at around 1,000 Baht per night, Wendy House is a good base for sightseeing in the Thai capital.
The rooms at Wendy House are small, but they are well designed and make best use of the limited space with plenty of room for hanging clothes and storing bags. All of the 38 guest rooms include air-conditioning, refrigerator, television and en-suite bathroom with hot shower. The rooms also include some other nice touches not always found in budget hotels such as a kettle, hair-dryer and slippers. There is also complimentary in-room wi-fi which worked very well during my recent 4-night stay.
The standard double room I stayed in had a small window letting in light, but the way the accommodation is configured means that not all rooms have natural light. Wendy House is located in a quiet soi away from the main road so there is no noise from traffic, bars or clubs. In fact, the noisiest thing about the room was the old-style air-conditioning unit. The bed itself was very comfortable and if you remember your ear-plugs any noise from the air-conditioning should be soon forgotten.
The room rate includes a buffet breakfast (served 06.30-11.00) which instantly improves the value-for-money rating for Wendy House. The breakfast was much better than I anticipated with a choice of cereals, items from the bakery (croissants, bread and rolls) and a selection of fresh fruits. You are also given a choice of eggs (boiled, scrambled or fried) and together with toast there is enough food (plus tea, coffee and fruit juice) to kick-start your morning ahead of a day’s sightseeing in Bangkok. The kitchen is open for meals during the day and evening, but apart from breakfast I ate elsewhere so I can’t comment on the quality. I did sneak a look at the menu though and the prices seemed very reasonable.
I thought the staff were excellent. The ladies on reception were very helpful and the staff serving breakfast were also friendly. The cleaning ladies had a smile and a ‘sawatdee ka’ and I got the impression it was a friendly place to work and they seem to get plenty of repeat visitors which is always a good sign. The guest house prides itself on being safe and family-friendly and from what I saw, Wendy House certainly lived up to that.
It’s worth noting that there are no lifts/elevators at Wendy House. There are only four floors, but if you have heavy bags you may want to consider requesting a room on a lower floor so you don’t have to struggle up and down the stairs. There are separate luggage storage facilities downstairs if you need to store bags for the short-term (free) and there is also a long-term left-luggage service (fees charged according to number of days) which is ideal for backpackers and those travelling around Thailand who will be returning back to Bangkok.
Complimentary wi-fi throughout the hotel was quick and worked well and this is another definite bonus for Bangkok accommodation in the budget price-range. There are no in-room safes, but safety deposit boxes are available at reception. A same-day laundry service is another very useful service for guests at Wendy House.
Perhaps the biggest plus for Wendy Guest House is the location in central Bangkok making it ideal for shopping and transport. The Skytrain station at National Stadium is a two-minute walk away and this itself also links to a covered walkway into the MBK shopping mall. It’s also easy to walk (or catch the Skytrain) to the shopping malls of Siam Square (Paragon, Central World etc.).
Wendy House is situated on Soi Kasemsan 1 which runs adjacent to Soi Kasemsan 2 where the highly recommended Jim Thompson’s House is located. A three minute walk in the other direction brings you to a handy boat stop on the Saen Saeb canal although these longtail-boat canal taxis aren’t everybody’s ideal form of transport. Less than 10-minutes’ walk away from Wendy House is the Phaya Thai station which is a terminal station for the airport train link with express trains from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi taking just 17 minutes. Phaya Thai also links up to the Skytrain network so you can opt to catch the Skytrain to National Stadium station which is closer to Wendy House than the Phaya Thai station.
I paid 1,000 Baht per night for my standard double room which I booked online in advance with Agoda. Considering the central location and all of the other facilities on offer, Wendy House is great value accommodation in Bangkok. I’d happily stay again.
