On a recent visit to Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai I opted to stay at the small guest-house, At Home Sukhothai which has received lots of good reviews on various online sites, but is it worthy of the positive recommendations? Here’s my personal review of my 4-night stay at one of the air-conditioned garden rooms at this budget accommodation in New Sukhothai.
At Home Sukhothai is actually a 50-year-old wooden family home that has been converted into a guest house. It’s a small and intimate setting with just 11 guest rooms, but the design is good and the addition of the more modern-style garden rooms has been subtly done without detracting from the charm of the original family home. Because of the nature of the accommodation, the walls are quite thin and you do hear the occasional creaking of wooden floorboards as guests move around. The owners are aware of the noise issue and put up polite notices in all rooms to remind guests to be considerate of others. I’m happy to say that during my stay with At Home Sukhothai everybody adhered to the request and with no televisions in the rooms, the only real noise I heard during my stay was the frogs croaking away in the gardens behind the house.
The garden room I stayed in was compact and basic, but had everything I needed for a short-stay. The bed proved to be very comfortable although the use of what was basically a giant towel as a bed sheet was a little bit odd. Having said that, it didn’t prevent me from getting some great nights’ sleep during my visit although I’m not sure how much of that was due to the bed and how much was due to physical tiredness from cycling around the Sukhothai Historical Park. It was a nice feature to have a small outdoor terrace for the garden rooms which makes for a pleasant place to sit with a drink or read a book at the end of a day’s sight-seeing. There is also seating in the main area downstairs where guests can unwind at the end of the day.
At Home Sukhothai has a small open-sided restaurant area with a television and it is here where breakfast is served (included in the price). The breakfast was quite good with a choice of eggs and toast, Thai food or a continental-style breakfast together with fruit juice and tea or coffee. I only had dinner here one evening and although the Penang curry was ok, it was toned down for foreign palates. Additional meals or drinks are charged to your room and you pay when you check-out. The guest-house has established quite a large library and there some interesting photos of Sukhothai dotted around the place.
The staff were excellent, particularly the owners who were charming and very helpful in providing free information and maps of Sukhothai and nearby Si Satchanalai as well as information on bus services. They can also arrange transport for you and provide a convenient laundry service. The wi-fi connection in my room was good which was another added bonus.
At Home Sukhothai is located in a quiet setting set back from a side-road in New Sukhothai. It’s a 10-minute walk to the Yom River and the night market area and just a few minutes’ further across the bridge to catch the songthaew that takes you to Sukhothai Historical Park. It’s a 10-minute road journey from Sukhothai bus station and the staff can arrange transport for you if required.
A very good choice for a stay in Sukhothai. The staff were charming in a pleasant, understated way and the accommodation itself represents good value for money. I would have no hesitation in staying here again and would be happy to recommend it to anybody looking for a place to stay in Sukhothai.
I booked my first night’s stay At Home Sukhothai online in advance with Agoda which gave me the option to check-out if the guest-house wasn’t any good. Once I was happy with the room and guest-house I paid cash for the extra nights directly with At Home Sukhothai when I checked out. Price of the garden room with air-conditioning, hot shower and breakfast was 800 Baht (staying in July). Slightly higher rates apply to rooms during tourist high season.
