Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai is one of the holiest sites in the north of Thailand, but that doesn’t mean it is a stuffy or staid place to visit. In fact, it’s one of the most enchanting temples in the whole of Thailand with a great deal of love and care going into the upkeep of the temple grounds. Although it’s a religious site, Doi Suthep is also a place to be enjoyed by all visitors, whether they be old or young, Thai or non-Thai. I hadn’t noticed these mini-monks before on previous visits so they could be a recent addition to the small rockery garden. The ornaments are complete with woolly hats which some monks in the north of Thailand wear when collecting alms in the early morning during the cool season. And if you like the look of these monks as a souvenir, they can be purchased at the excellent Chiang Mai Walking Street Market.
