October 23 is celebrated in Thailand as Chulalongkorn Day in honour of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). This year, the day falls on a Sunday so tomorrow (Monday October 24) is an official public holiday in Thailand. Today, Thai people will lay flowers at statues which commemorate King Chulalongkorn, the grandfather of the present King of Thailand. If you are visiting Thailand at any time, look out for images of King Rama V inside shops and restaurants. His portrait is believed to bring good luck for businesses and sepia-coloured images can often be seen hanging up in premises alongside portraits of the present king. An image of King Chulalongkorn can also be seen on the back of a 100 Baht note.
