This year’s Loy Krathong events will have an added poignancy in Thailand. With so many Thai people affected directly or indirectly by some of the worst floods seen in Thailand for 50 years, Loy Krathong is partly about paying homage to the water goddess, Mae Kongkha (Mother of Waters). Small baskets or rafts known as ‘krathongs‘ are placed on rivers and waterways to float away bad luck and misfortune at the end of the rainy season. This year, Loy Krathong is celebrated from November 9-10 with the Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai taking place from November 5-10.
