I took these photos outside Chiang Mai University (CMU) in January of this year on the day of the graduation ceremony. Graduating from university in Thailand is a prestigious event which brings honour to students and the student’s family. For the large-scale graduation ceremonies held at the major Thai universities, the events are often attended by Thai royalty. On this occasion in Chiang Mai earlier this year, it was HRH Princess Sirindhorn who handed out the diplomas. The area in and around the university was alive with vendors selling flowers, mascots and mementoes. The bouquets and mascots were all perfectly presented and selling for an average 150 Baht a time. Purple is the colour associated with CMU so there was lots of purple on display.
