Big Buddha Ko Samui

TIME : 2016/2/24 18:38:57

If you are flying to Ko Samui, keep an eye out for the largest Buddha figure on the island which is clearly visible as you come in to land. For a close up view, visit Wat Phra Yai the temple which is home to the Big Buddha and overlooks Bangrak Beach (also known as Big Buddha Beach) in the north-east corner of Ko Samui.
Big Buddha, Ko Samui, Thailand
The Big Buddha is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. The large golden-coloured statue of the Buddha sits high on a platform overlooking the north coast of Ko Samui. A staircase leads to the platform and signs in English remind visitors to remove their shoes before visiting the Buddha statue. Thai people visiting the island for the first time or just returning home will often make a point of visiting the temple at the earliest opportunity to wai phra.

The souvenir shops, stalls and cafes in and around the temple grounds can make it feel a bit ‘touristy’ and unfortunately a small minority of visitors seem to forget that they are in fact at a temple and not still on the beach. Please act and dress respectfully at all Thai temples and in the presence of any Buddha images. Most tours of the island include a visit to the Big Buddha or you can take a taxi or songthaew (approximately 15 minutes from Chaweng Beach).
