For those wishing to do a bit of island-hopping in the Phuket and Krabi region, there is now an alternative to the traditional ferry boat.
Destination Air run the only seaplane shuttle service in Thailand, with planes landing on the waterfront of major hotels and resorts. I haven’t flown with them so I have no idea how good or bad they are, but it looks like a decent service that will cater to a niche market. Prices are obviously expensive compared to the ferry and are aimed at those on a higher budget rather than the average backpacker. It will be interesting to see whether Destination Air can establish themselves as a long-term player, but it’s certainly an interesting concept.
Typical journey times from Phuket are:
Phi Phi – 13 minutes
Krabi – 20 minutes
Ko Lanta – 30 minutes.
