A few years back, this little guest house was doing good trade under its former guise as Penny’s. It was then taken over in 2003 by the people who ran the Grand Tower in Krabi Town and was renamed Ao Nang Grand Inn and was a wonderful place to stay. Under the subsequent management of Khun Mahlee, the Grand Inn built up a loyal patronage for the wonderful home cooking and the friendliness of the staff. Khun Mahlee moved on to Australia in January 2007 and the change in ownership has seen a decline in the standards at the Grand Inn. Gone are the friendly faces (with the honourable exception of Khun Aorn) to be replaced by surly staff intent on trying to book visitors on as many tours as possible.
The bathrooms (in both fan and air-con rooms) are in urgent need of repair as are the adjoining doors with mildew and damp and issue. On the positive side, what hasn’t changed about the Grand Inn is its excellent location. The beds also remain both clean and comfortable.
Of course, this is a purely personal view and others may be happy with their stay at the Ao Nang Grand Inn. The point I’m trying to make is how quickly things can change in Thailand when it comes to accommodation, particularly budget accommodation. Places change hands and standards can go up or down. Hotels and guest houses I would previously recommend suddenly become less desirable and vice-versa.
Marks: 5/10
Summary: Very sad to such a great place decline so quickly.
