What to see and do in Bodrum – a guide to notable attractions and landmarks

Whilst Bodrum is seen by many as a relaxing summer getaway, with perfectly clear waters and sunshine, the area also boasts an incredibly deep history and even plays host to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Visitors can explore the ancient relics at Bodrum Castle, watch the yachts come in, or meander through a peaceful cove to keep busy.

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

 

The Mausoleum at the ancient city of Halicarnassus was the tomb of the King Mausolus and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its site today is an open-air museum that is popular with travelers and visited with awe for the accomplishments of the ancients. With little but the foundations of this great tomb remaining, there is a small museum that helps tourists visualise how impressive this would have been in its day. Visitors are given the freedom to roam wherever they wish and encouraged to explore the ruins up close, not view them from a distance.

 

Castle of St Peter

 

Undoubtedly a must see for any visitor is the famous St Peter’s Castle, the most prominent feature of Bodrum. The castle was constructed by the Knights of Rhodes in the 15th century, and was built partly from the remains of the mausoleum of Mausolus. Visitors are able to walk around the remains and imagine what the castle was like originally. Found within the walls of St Peter’s Castle, the Underwater Archaeology Museum features works of art, retrieved artifacts and shipwrecks which allow visitors to be taken back in time into the worlds of those ancient mariners who sailed to meet their destiny shipwrecked in the Aegean Sea.

 

Port Bodrum Yalikavak

 

Originally Bodrum’s central fishing port, Yalikavak is now considered to be one of the most elite villages on the Bodrum Peninsula. With berths for 450 yachts as well as an assortment of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars there’s plenty to distract and entertain those arriving at this location on foot. The area also hosts a large bayside 2,500 seat Amphitheatre that hosts musical and artistic events as well as Moonlight Cinema nights on Wednesdays. The VIP Village and Fishermen’s Village are a mix of open spaces and narrow lanes which help to create a perfect synergy of new-world luxury and old-world charm.

 

Bardakci Cove

 

Boasting a plethora of marine life, this stunning part of the Turkish coastline is an ideal spot for keen snorkelers or those looking to immerse themselves amongst the colorful fish that inhabit the area. The nearest bay to Bodrum’s town center, Bardakci Cove, is a small cove with a sandy beach. It features perfectly clear waters and beautiful views out to Bodrum Castle. The cove has a mythical story attached to it which further makes it a draw for tourists and travelers to the region.
