By far the best way to shop in Cappadocia is to grab a map, set aside a few hours, and hit the street markets, which never fail to entice with their seductive colors and captivating scents. However, there is also a vast array of options for those who desire a more structured retail experience, with countless boutiques and charming little shops hidden around every street corner. Like everything else here, shopping in Cappadocia is a laidback and relaxing pastime, guaranteed to leave you satisfied and rejuvenated.
Markets and handicraftBy far the most bustling and fascinating town markets and bazaars in the region can be found in Kayseri, the Islamic heart of Cappadocia. Kapali Carsi, set in the ornate archways of one of the city’s oldest buildings is a dynamic life-force of enterprising locals, advertising their – often handmade – wares. Vibrant and exciting, this warren of stalls is a must for any tourist, but be prepared to barter! The Bedesten is a bazaar for all architect enthusiasts, as it takes place under the elaborate and ornamental domes of ‘Sipahi’, a building dating back to 1498. If not for the array of beautiful pottery items, slippers and spices that can be found here, Bedesten is worth visiting for the photography opportunities alone.
Jewelry
If it’s intricate, bespoke jewelry that you are shopping for, by far the best place to go is Ozier Artisanal Centre in Uçhisar, run by a team of expert jewelers who are always happy to advise and help you with any purchase. For the Turkish take on chic, contemporary jewelry trends, GÖreme Onyx, also in Uçhisar displays a range of stunning pieces; each created using semi-precious stones, and finished to a truly superb standard.
Carpets and rugs
Synonymous with Turkish culture, and subsequently a brilliant souvenir option, carpets and rugs are, of course, readily available throughout the Cappadocia region. Tribal Collections in GÖreme offers an incredible selection of new and antique rugs and carpets, in all imaginable colors and patterns. Set aside some time for this excursion, as the choice can be overwhelming. For a more rustic and authentic feel, Rose Carpet Shop is everything you could wish for in a ramshackle, traditional rug vendor. Visiting Sultan Carpet, also in GÖreme, is a much more homely experience, as the long-established shop features threadbare sofas and armchairs for leisurely carpet browsing.
Pottery and ceramics
The hand-pottery production and trade that is at the heart of Cappadocia fuels a number of ceramic shops throughout the region. Guray and Kaya Ceramic House in Avanos sells stunning pottery items that have all been handmade by the family who run the shop, a perfect example of the traditional, local businesses of the region. Chez Galip Pottery, also in Avanos, is situated in one of the town’s distinctive caves, and is a working pottery-studio, the produce of which is sold in the front of the shop. Located in GÖreme, the not-at-all aptly named Argos ceramic shop sells a beautiful collection of plates, bowls and other items, all inspired by the colors and patterns of South East Asia.
