The shopping here is relaxed and there are many pedestrianised streets full to the brim with intriguing shops such as the renowned Queen Street Shopping Mall. In addition are large shopping malls and some of Australia's top department stores where great deals can be had out of season.
Central Brisbane has the most options and best variety of shops, while not far away is the Gold Coast, which comes with a huge supply of shopping malls and pedestrianised shopping precincts.
More of a shopping street than its title suggests, this is the main shopping area in the city and is located in the CBD area of central Brisbane. It is a long pedestrian street with wall-to-wall shops and restaurants that span a couple of city blocks. Queen Street Shopping Mall appeals to all types and there are many big name stores here.
For fashion, the eastern suburb of Fortitude Valley is definitely the best place to head in Brisbane. It features the latest garb in boutiques and large department stores, and also has many antiques stores and aboriginal art galleries. Brunswick Street, Ann Street, and Wickham Street are the best bets.
Chinatown is situated within the Fortitude Valley area and is next to Brunswick Street Station. It is mostly a pedestrian market area that has typical touristy tack, yet is a must-see and an attraction in itself. The best time to shop and eat here is during the evening.
Paddington is one of Brisbane's older suburbs for both eating and shopping. It is a mile or so from the CBD and has some of the best shopping in town along La Trobe Street, where there is everything from designer fashion to second-hand goods and antiques. This area buzzes during weekends although it gets crowded.
Little Stanley Street and Boundary Road are particularly fun for shopping on Friday and Saturday and are also popular areas for eating. There is an arts and crafts market here on weekends. The West End is for those into alternative clothing such as Gothic items.
Most shops close on Sunday in Brisbane, apart from the larger malls, while late night shopping is available on Thursday or Friday. Head to Fortitude Valley (east of the CBD) for higher-end apparel and the South Bank Art and Craft Market for cheaper deals.
