Perth is especially known for its range of creative seafood dishes, and, with the best seafood restaurants being located at the waters' edge on Sunset Coast, the freshness is assured. Specialties include barramundi, freshwater crayfish and tiger prawns.
Japanese cuisine is also popular in Perth and there is a Chinatown region near downtown with all sorts of Asian goodies, to boot. Shoppers who fancy a quick snack can hit the downtown food courts, which reside in the bigger malls and arcades, and there are also many burger and hotdog joints to choose from.
Suburban Perth has great scope for eating, with the Northbridge area being especially noteworthy. It is within walking distance of downtown and comes with a range of bring-your-own (alcohol) eateries, along with fine dining and good drinking. The only problem with eating out in Perth is that most places shut up shop by 22:00.
The Northbridge area of Perth is the best place to eat. The streets here are close together and contain scores of cafés and restaurants, from cheap bring-your-own (BYO) joints to top-flight Italian restaurants. William Street is the main thoroughfare, while Aberdeen Street buzzes with eateries and pubs.
Chinatown resides in Northbridge and has the best Asian treats in town. It is just over the rail tracks and in between Roe and James streets, and although mostly Cantonese food, there are also Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Vietnamese restaurants here.
You won't find the best eating in downtown Perth (below the rail tracks) as much of it winds down after the shops close past office hours. There are, however, many cafés and fast food places here, including McDonalds, as well as a glut of food courts where you can try a variety of cuisines. The best known is the Carillon Food Court in Carillon City arcade.
These pleasant suburbs border Northbridge to the west and north respectively and feature a host of trendy eating and good shopping options. Subiaco's Hay Street and Leederville's Oxford Street are the best bets.
The best eating along this beautiful stretch of the Perth coastline goes from Scarborough Beach up past North Beach, where some of the finest seafood eateries in the Western Australia capital reside. Scarborough Beach has the best and most restaurants, with the atmosphere being typically relaxed and one of sea views and sublime sunsets.
South Terrace is where you will find the majority of the cafés and restaurants in Fremantle. Many of them are open to the street, with tables and chairs neatly laid-out to catch passers by. It has a distinct European feel to it and is a pleasant place to dine.
