The sprawling city of Melbourne has a number of districts, neighborhoods and suburbs which all have a unique feel and atmosphere. The city has a diverse range of culture and heritage dating back to the 1800s when the city was founded.

The Yarra River runs along the city and divides it from the outer suburbs. In recent years there has been much development along the riverbanks, creating modern entertainment venues, shopping centers and restaurant precincts.

The CBD is made up of tall skyscrapers catering to both commercial offices and residential apartments. The inner city streets are charming, with small laneways covered in street art, cozy arcades with boutique shops and alfresco café s littered throughout.

CBD

The modern grid-like centre of Melbourne is lined with both Victoria building and sleek modern glass structures. The pedestrianised Bourke and Swanston streets are shopping meccas while Collins Street offers more exclusive shopping. Flinders Street Station is the CBD's main transport hub but street cars serve all areas.

St Kilda

Situated approximately 6km south of Melbourne's CBD, St Kilda is a trendy and popular suburb that offers a spectacular beachfront area with countless shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. There are numerous attractions including the famous Luna Park amusement park.

Southbank

Positioned on the southern side of the Yarra River, Southbank is a busy part of the city, with the Crown Entertainment Complex, the Melbourne Convention Center and the Victorian Arts Center being located in the area.

Fitzroy

Fitzroy is an inner city suburb that has a number of interesting shops, restaurants and café s. The area is known as Melbourne's bohemian quarter and is home to some of the city's best nightclubs and bars playing live music.

Carlton

In the north of Melbourne is the charming suburb of Carlton, which boasts some of the most impressive homes in the city. The suburb has a large Italian community and is where you can find Little Italy, which has a plethora of Italian restaurants, café s and supermarkets.

Richmond

The riverside district of Richmond is a busy area with the impressive Melbourne Cricket Ground stadium, Royal Botanical Gardens and Southgate Shopping Center. Along the riverfront are an array of restaurants, bars and shops for visitors to enjoy.

South Yarra

Located close to the center of Melbourne on the Yarra River, South Yarra is one of the trendiest and most affluent areas of the city. There are large sprawling mansions, exclusive shops and fine dining restaurants.

Williamstown

Williamstown was originally founded in 1837 and was the first seaport of the city. The charming town has a wealth of historic attractions and beautiful scenic views over the natural harbor and Hobsons Bay. In recent years the area has been experiencing rapid development and has become a popular tourist destination.
