Kings Park and Botanic Gardens is an oasis in Perth set on a hillside near the Swan River over 400 hectares of land. There are monuments, walking paths, cafes and other attractions to partake in at the park, but one of the best is just the simple act of being in the outdoors with spectacular views of both Perth and the river.
If the sun is shining, like it was when I recently visited, the place is even more brilliant. Those strong Perth rays can sometimes be a nuisance when walking around the city, but the shaded areas in Kings Park are plentiful and welcomed. It’s overall a lovely place to spend the afternoon, and here is what to do if you make a stop:
1. Have a picnic. Bring some sandwiches and spread yourselves out on a blanket in clear view of the glorious Perth skyline. Listen to the birds fly by, squawking or chirping depending on the type, and savor the breeze sneaking through the trees.
2. Take a treetop walk. The Lotterywest Federation Walkway lets visitors walk in the treetops of tall Eucalyptus while catching scenic views of the Swan River, wildflower gardens and forest. The walkway extends 620 meters in length and meets a maximum height of 16 meters.
3. Have a BBQ at Synergy Parkland. Synergy Parkland is one section of the park that is full of play equipment for the kids and free barbecue and picnic areas for the adults. There is the chance to step back in time at Synergy with ancient flora and fauna displays and replica dinosaurs.
4. Climb the DNA Tower. This winding mix of stairs comes together to form a double helix. It’s 101 steps to the top, but once you’re there, you’ll have a great view!

In addition to this, there are war memorials scattered throughout the park that deserve a stop. When you’re feeling peckish, a few cafes can help keep you going. There are even some shops where you can buy Aboriginal art and other types of souvenirs.
The Aspects Gift Shop is the meeting place for free, guided walks that occur daily from 10am to 2pm.
Kings Park is a peaceful place. If you need a spot to unwind, then I highly suggest catching bus 37 or 39 out to the park for a day of relaxation in the fresh air.
