One of the best ways to get out of Sydney city is to take a weekend trip to the Hunter Valley, an area to the north of Sydney known for it’s glorious wines. It’s a great place to get out into nature, have picnics with friends in the summer, sit by the fireplace with a bottle of wine in winter and just get some fresh air at any time of the year. The Hunter Valley can be anything from romantic to playful depending on who you’re traveling with at the time.
Normally, wine country wouldn’t be considered a budget traveler’s friend, but it is good to know that there are in fact a couple of hostels and cheap bed options to choose from in the area if you’re looking to save a few bucks (and spend more on wine).
Hostels in the Hunter Valley will generally not be right next to the cellar door, so you will either have to self-drive or rent a wine tasting taxi or taxi bus for the day, which is probably better anyway. Who wants to be the designated driver in wine country?
