Getting to Broken Hill from Sydney is always a possibility. For some, though, taking the time and effort to self-drive 15 hours through some of the most barren locations in New South Wales is not on the menu. For them, I have put together this list of ways to get to Broken Hill either via train, bus or plane.
The long distance train from Sydney, the Indian Pacific, will take you all the way to Perth if you want (the ride takes 3 days), or you can get off at the first major stop: Broken Hill. If going from Sydney, trains depart on Saturday and Wednesday at 2:55 pm, arriving in Broken Hill at 6:40 am the following morning. From Broken Hill, trains depart at 6:30 pm on Friday and Tuesday, arriving back at Sydney at 10:40 am the following morning.
There are different classes of service on the Indian Pacific train from red to gold to platinum, and those range from comfy chairs to private berths.
Through CountryLink, you have two options: a train the entire way that only leaves on Mondays or a train plus coach combo that leaves daily. The Broken Hill Outback Explorer train leaves at 6:20 am on Monday morning and arrives in Broken Hill, after many stops, at 7:10 pm. The daily train plus coach option leaves at 7:10 am and arrives in Broken Hill at 10:45 pm, switching to a coach in Dubbo.
On searching through Greyhound, I did not see a bus option to Broken Hill. However, you are able to do the CountryLink train and bus combination listed above.
Regional Express Airlines will fly you from Sydney to Broken Hill, saving you hours of time and hassle in getting to the outback. You can quickly and easily search for a flight to Broken Hill using the search widget below.
