The Gold Coast is one of the top vacation destinations in Australia for Australians and tourists alike. This probably has something to do with the Gold Coast’s sun and fun attitude. There are activities galore to partake in during your stay from bungee jumping to surfing. If you are thinking about making this a stop on your Australia itinerary, it might be helpful to get a bit of insight that may make or break your holiday.
The sunshine, nice weather, miles of beaches, theme parks and gentle surf mean the real draw of the Gold Coast is just being outside. Here, you can go jet boating, kayaking, ATV trekking and zorbing. A trip to Dreamworld and Whitewater world will keep you busy for another day or two, and there’s always the Aquaduck for an interesting and more relaxing excursion. The moral of the story is that if you don’t like the outdoors and sunshine, the Gold Coast might not be for you.
Surfers Paradise is the most popular destination, but it is also the one with the most extreme nightlife. Coolangatta is a quieter option, located next to the airport, but some would say it is too far from all of the action. Broadbeach and Southport are other popular options, and it is up to your own travel preferences which one to choose. Getting around the Gold Coast via the bus system, especially if you are looking to get to the theme parks and the Gold Coast Hinterland, can be time consuming and expensive. If you are traveling with others, renting a vehicle can be worth it and then some. However, plans for lounging on the beach, shopping and hitting clubs can easily be managed without any public transport whatsoever.
Schoolies happens for about 2 weeks every year near December in the Gold Coast. This is basically a time when fresh high school grads congregate for something that resembles Spring Break. If you’re not in the age range of schoolies, I wouldn’t recommend going during this time. I’ve also been informed that there is a period of time in late September and October when men on footy trips take over.
Gold Coast theme parks, surf lessons and entry fees to some attractions don’t come cheap, so if you’re looking to have a thrilling time on the Gold Coast then have the funds to back it up.
