The last month of summer in Sydney, February, is a good choice for those who like festivals and want to enjoy the good weather. The daily maximum temperature is 25.8C and the daily minimum is 18.7C, which makes it perfect for spending time checking out the sights.
How to get to Sydney
Since February is still part of the high season, make sure to look for cheap tickets to Australia slightly in advance (2 to 6 weeks is quite enough). Make sure to check out the special offers especially if you are a frequent flyer on airlines which fly into Sydney.
As for accommodation in Sydney, those who plan to save some money should look beyond the typical budget hotels. Sydney hostels are plentiful and varied. You can easily find a private room to suit your budget if you plan to have some intimacy, or you can opt for a dorm if you don’t mind the crowds. Either way, check the reviews before you decide where to stay; it’s a pity to book a party hostel if you plan to sleep at night.
Events and things to do
When it comes to the things to do, you won’t be bored in Sydney. Until March 12, 2010, Bondi Openair offers the visitors the possibility to enjoy movies, live music and entertainment in the courtyard amphitheatre of the Bondi Pavilion.
Shakespeare fans will be delighted to attend Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice in the Bicentennial Park (on alternate nights between February 7 and 14, 2010).
The Chinese New Year is celebrated between February 12 and 28. You can check out the Chinese markets, watch the Dragon Boat Races, and a Twilight Parade.
From February 19 to March 7, 2010, Mardi Gras takes place in Sydney. On February 27 you can watch the Annual Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Celebrations which take place on Oxford Street.
Cobargo Folk Festival takes place between February 26 and 28, 2010 and features concerts, comedy acts as well as exotic food stalls and a bar. It is held at Cobargo Showground, about five hours drive from Sydney (so you can easily plan to attend the festival as part of a day trip).
