Donizetti's comic opera L'elisir d'amore (the Elixir of Love) will be performed in Pafos harbour, 6, 7 and 8 September 2013
Those who created the Pafos Aphrodite Festival have watched it steadily develop into a major international event that attracts opera lovers from all over the world as well as an increasingly large local audience. Early each autumn, a well-loved opera from the international repertoire is performed by a visiting opera company in the spectacular setting of Pafos (Paphos) harbour with its medieval castle as the backdrop to the stage. This year is a very special one for the Pafos Aphrodite Festival Company (PAFC) as it celebrates its 15th anniversary – and it will do so in great style with performances of Donizetti's comic opera L'elisir d'amore (the Elixir of Love) by the internationally acclaimed Opera Futura Verona in cooperation with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and My Destination Cyprus is proudly the media sponsor.
This year, the opera will be performed in Pafos harbour during the first weekend in September by Opera Futura Verona. This year’s performance will be following an impressive line-up of previous festivals that include Aida (1999), Carmen (2000), the memorable twin performances of Nabucco and Zorba the Greek (2001), Turandot (2002), Tosca (2003), Rigoletto (2004), La Traviata (2005), Un Ballo in Maschera (2006), Il Trovatore (2007) La Boheme (2010) and last year's Otello. Opera Futura Verona, like previous opera companies, will have a memorable time performing in Cyprus and has the experience of the many challenges posed of performing in the open air on a balmy summer evening as the company regularly performs in Verona's 2,000 year old Roman amphitheatre.
The Pafos Aphrodite Festival Company (PAFC) was founded in 1998 by members of the Municipalities of Pafos, Pegeia (Peyia) and Geroskipou (Yeroskipou) and members of the Hoteliers' Association - Pafos Regional Committee with the aim of promoting the town for major international cultural events. The PAFC has been supported throughout by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism. Since its creation, the annual opera in Pafos harbour has become a major international event and PAFC also organises the Akamas Festival in the springtime which welcomes classical musicians from the international circuit who perform some of the most loved classical works. The organisation is non -profit making and each year has been strengthened by the experience it has gained from the scores of different professionals who are involved with the production and the favourable reviews written by countless critics in the international press.
