Researching a city online is really valuable and can be very inspiring, but once you get to the destination it really helps to have something physical to hold in your hands. I’m a big guidebook nerd and I love Lonely Planet guides and especially Rick Steves when I’m in Europe. But those guides cost quite a bit of money and they take up a bit of space in your daypack as well.
As an alternative to that you might be interested in downloading a miniature pdf travel guide, and as luck would have it you can download the Amsterdam one from BootsnAll right here. Most of the information is kind of basic, but they have addresses, prices, and opening hours for most of the major attractions, and quite a few other interesting things that might come in handy. There are also 3 maps near the back of this 15-page pdf file, and the last one in the group is a really good map of the city center that you can print out and keep with you.
There are also a few hundred other similar arrival guides in this series, so if you are going elsewhere you might want to look at the whole collection of free downloadable travel guides from BootsnAll.
