Where to shop in Ibiza – from market stalls to concept stores

TIME : 2016/2/24 9:17:29

Ibiza actually doesn't have a main shopping area, but each town has a number of different stores and there are certain streets with nothing but shop after shop on them. So, that good old ‘shop 'til you drop’ feeling can of course be had here! Top of the line jewelers can be found right next to imports from India and vintage clothing can be found next door to well-known franchises.

Ralph BehnkeRalph BehnkeMy Destination local expert onIbizaIf you prefer the outdoor shopping experience, be sure to visit one of the many Hippie Markets. Gorgeous stalls with all sorts of knick-knacks, clothing, decorative pieces and of course jewelry can be found at them. There are a number of flea markets too if you're in need of a second hand item and most of the markets have great food stalls, bars or restaurants. These mercadillos have become a wonderful social scene and gossip pond for the locals, so if you're up for meeting some friendly faces, check them out!

The capital

There are various shopping areas in the capital of our island and lots of fashion boutiques and unique shops hidden all around the town. Be sure to visit the main shopping streets which are Calle de la Cruz, Avenida Bartolomé Roselló and Vara de Rey. These streets are where all the main franchises, such as Zara and The Body Shop, are located but keep your eyes wide open as almost all of the side streets are home to fantastic 20€ shops, great shoe shops and bag shops. The port area comes alive at night with pop up stalls as does the old town up on the hill behind it, with shops, bars and restaurants.

Out of town

For a unique experience, an out of town trip is required to visit the likes of boutique stores, art galleries and large furniture warehouses. These are often located on the roadsides so have convenient parking and a lovely rural feel. Traditional old farmhouses have been converted into some of the most beautiful museum-like shops with rooms filled with treasures. A few of these venues even have their own on-site cafés, restaurants & wellness centers like La Galería Elefante Concept Store on the road to Santa Gertrudis. More recently, pop up boutiques can be found at rural hotels, beaches, beach clubs and restaurants.

The markets

Markets in Ibiza are quite popular and are generally held on a certain day of the week so be sure to find out beforehand. There are two main markets, come rain or shine, all summer long; Punta Arabí in Es Canar on a Wednesday and Las Dalias in San Carlos on a Saturday. Many of the smaller towns now also hold their own craft markets. Visit the Cala Llonga market every Thursday evening along the seafront, the Santa Eulalia market along the promenade down towards the beach every day of the week, the San Juan morning market every Sunday all year round and many, many more. The flea markets or car boot sales are great fun too, with a buzzing atmosphere, live music and entertainment.
