A trip to the Grand Canyon is one of those once-in-a-lifetime vacations that you’re guaranteed never to forget. As well serving up some of Mother Nature’s most spectacular sights, it boasts an endless array of incredible hiking routes. For a truly awe-inspiring experience, you could always rush down the Colorado River on a raft, or perhaps take in the magic of a 2 billion year old landmark from a helicopter high above.Where to eat

The Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim is home to plenty of cafés and restaurants to pop into and recharge before another spell in the wilderness. Whether you want something light and uncomplicated in a casual setting or more refined fare, there’s a lot on offer. The El Tovar Hotel is home to a glorious upmarket option in the El Tovar Dining Room – emblazoned with murals of Native American life, it's an eye-catching experience. Rest assured, though, you’ll have no problem grabbing a quick and tasty burger or sandwich in the village. A few mid-range steakhouses and barbeque options are available in nearby Tusayan. Where to stay

The Grand Canyon Village is the best place for anyone desiring a room close to the action. There's a good variety to choose from, including reliable chain favorites as well as grand independent accommodation steeped in local history. The hotels in nearby Tusayan are also popular with tourists and typically come with a swimming pool, on site restaurants, and ample space to kick back and relax. To get the most out of a lower budget, a trip further afield to Williams – about an hour’s drive from the park – is the best way to go.

Travel tips

It’s essential to take care and plan thoroughly for a trip to the Grand Canyon, particularly if you intend on hiking, boating, or camping. The weather can be very dry, hot, wet, and cold, depending on what Mother Nature feels like, so it’s vital to research and be prepared for all eventualities. It’s also worth noting that however far you descend you will then have to trek back up again, so it’s advised to keep a wary eye on your group’s energy levels and limitations. Overnight hikers will want to enquire ahead about permits, while day hikers should be fine without. Cell phone reception is sporadic throughout the park and cannot be relied on for communication.
