Best Time to Travel
The summer months, from June to August, are surely the best time to make the most of Atlantic City. Sun-dappled days provide perfect beach weather, and while it can get very hot and humid, there’s always a cool breeze blowing in off the ocean. The summer months also see celebrated city festivals, such as the Chicken Bone Beach Jazz Concert Series. If you prefer a quieter, more laid-back vibe, visit from March to May, where the sights will be less crowded and the temperature will be milder.
Not to Miss
Whatever your reason for visiting Atlantic City, there’s no excuse for missing out on the boardwalk - America’s first – which stretches for miles and is dotted with seafood restaurants, buzzing bars, salt-water taffy stores, and retro arcades, all with a picture-perfect view across the shimmering Atlantic ocean. If you’re feeling lucky, take a spin in the city’s ritzy casinos, such as Caesars. For family-friendly activities, head to the Atlantic City Aquarium, or check out the towering 19th century Absecon Lighthouse.
Getting around
Atlantic City is conveniently less than 10 miles east of Atlantic City Airport, a stellar transport hub that serves direct domestic flights, to and from destinations like Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. Alternatively, fly in to Philadelphia, which handles international flights from destinations like London and Amsterdam, and catch an Amtrak train to Atlantic City. While having your own car in the city can be handy, ambling along the boardwalk is an equally appealing way of getting around.
Cuisine
While Atlantic City does boast a strong sense of international cuisine - showcasing the likes of sublime Japanese noodles and delectably juicy burgers – it’s the seafood that really makes mouths water. You’ll discover plenty of raw bars - which serve up rich oysters and mussels - and restaurants boasting succulent, spicy shrimp and creamy clam chowder. Expect a lot of classic American fare in Atlantic City, too, from the finest signature steaks to the hotdogs and pretzels of boardwalk street vendors.
Customs and etiquette
Atlantic City is an extremely popular destination for fun-seeking tourists to unwind in the bouncing bars and chance their luck in the casinos. While there’s a wealth of family-friendly activities, events, and attractions, be aware that the central boardwalk area may be unsuitable at night for younger kids. Like anywhere in the USA, tipping is important - typically at around 15% - especially when in restaurants or taking taxi cabs. It’s also not uncommon to tip the dealer at a casino. Fast Facts
