Towering office complexes mark the heart of Downtown Atlanta. Located at the intersection of the I-75 and I-20 expressways, this is the city’s business center, its sidewalks crowded with business suits and shaded by high-rise hotels and condominiums. But Downtown is also where to find some of Atlanta’s most popular tourist attractions – the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola and Centennial Olympic Park. Atlanta’s subway system intersects beneath this neighborhood, making it easy to travel to points throughout the city. Immediately to the north is Midtown, while southeast of Downtown is the Sweet Auburn neighborhood.
Immediately north of Downtown, Midtown is home to many of Atlanta’s most important cultural institutions: the High Museum of Art, the Margaret Mitchell House and Piedmont Park. Midtown is also known for its nightlife. In the rooftop bars along Crescent Avenue and Peachtree Street you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of nighttime Downtown and catch a cooling breeze at the same time. East of Midtown is trendy Virginia Highland and bohemian Little Five Points.
North of Midtown but within the I-285 expressway, Buckhead is where to stay in Atlanta if fashionable shopping and trendy restaurants suit you. Stylish department stores and hip boutiques fill their windows with the latest clothing and artwork along Peachtree Street, while outdoor cafés offer ample opportunity to rest tired feet. You’ll also find upscale dining and shopping at Lennox Square and Phipps Plaza. Buckhead lies on the subway line, an easy ride away from attractions in the city center.
”The Perimeter” refers to the northern reaches of the I-285 expressway that rings Atlanta. Located north of Buckhead and near the suburb of Sandy Springs, Perimeter Center’s chief tourist attraction is the massive, moderately-priced Perimeter Mall. Other sites, like the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and the international dining scene on Buford Highway, are within an easy drive along I-285. Atlanta’s subway system has two stations near Perimeter Center, one at the Perimeter Mall.
Set on the northwestern edge of Atlanta, Marietta has a quiet, residential character. Yet its proximity to major Atlanta expressways, I-75 and I-285, means travelers are never more than a short drive from the city’s central attractions. There’s plenty of watery fun near Marietta. Spend a day canoeing the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, or opt for a wild, wet time at Six Flags White Water amusement park. Marietta is also home to the beautifully manicured City Club Marietta golf course.
