Chicago and Kansas City, MO are just over 500 miles from one another, a drive that takes about 8.5 hours, depending on traffic. The train takes a little less and bus the takes a little longer, so if you’re more concerned with time than cost, flying is the best way to go. Bear in mind though, that you will need a car to get around the city and the shuttle from the airport is at least $18 each way.

Driving
The drive between Chicago and South Bend is about 500 miles through Illinois, past Springfield, and then through northern Missouri. Coming in or out of Chicago you’re likely to hit traffic so time your drive carefully.
