If you’re like me, you may have dropped the ball on Mother’s Day celebration planning. But whether you are live in Chicago or are coming in from out of town, there’s still time to plan the perfect day for your mom, no matter what her tastes. Here are a few ideas.
For the foodie mom
Elate in the Hotel Felix
For $33 for adults ($20 for kids), sample a three course prixe fixe menu with eco-friendly and organic entrees like braised pork and egg tostada or crème brulee pancakes, along with a huge buffets and pastries and breads.
Cafe des Architects
From 10 until 4pm, the restaurant will offer a four-course brunch with items like buttermilk pancakes, wild Alaskan halibut, and salted caramel chocolate cake. Cost is $45 for adults, $19 for kids, and reservations are recommended.
Custom House
From 10:30 to 2:30, indulge in a three course menu featuring crab bisque, spinach omelete, and for moms, a complimentary mimosa. Coast is $32 for adults; $15 for kids under $13.
The Chopping Block
For a mom who loves to cook, check out the classes offered on Mother’s Day at the Chopping Block locations in Lincoln Square or River North. Multiple classes are held throughout the day for mom’s and kids of all ages.
For the swanky mom
Offering sweeping views of the Chicago River, Lake Michigan, and the Wrigley Clock Tower, Sixteen just oozes swanky. Brunch here is sure to make mom feel special, just don’t forget to make reservations.
The Lobby at the Peninsula
One of the most exquisite hotels in town, the Peninsula offers an afternoon tea service to match. Treat mom to a glass of Champagne, tea, delicate sandwiches and pastries, and an hour or two of uninterrupted quality time.
For the out of town mom
Cheesy as it might seem to a local, the Chicago lake cruises are actually a lot of fun. The food is surprisingly good and the views of the city Skyline can’t be beat. Show mom the beauty of Chicago and treat her to brunch on board. Brunch buffet cruises that also include dancing, and a mimosa for mom, start at $59.90 per person and leave at 11:30am (advance reservations required).
You can also skip the dining portion and take mom on a lovely Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise so she can learn all about the city.
For the party mom
If mom’s a fun-loving gal who will be down for a few mimosas, your best bet is to take her to a bottomless mimosas brunch. The atmosphere at each of these places can vary from subdued and sophisticated to wild and crazy, so choose based on mom’s personality.
For children on a budget
If you’re opting for dinner with mom instead of brunch and are on a tight budget, check out some of these great places to dine for less. You can also save money by going to a BYOB restaurant – just be sure to surprise mom with a bottle of her favorite vino.
