Winter is off-season in Chicago, and once you step outside in the city you’ll understand why. It’s cold, there’s just no denying it. Temps range from 24-38°F, but it can often feel much colder due to the dreaded “wind chill factor” which can make it feel as mush as 10-15 degrees colder.
Luckily, for those who do brave the bitter cold for a visit, the reward is significantly fewer crowds and lower costs. On weekends during the winter months, hotel room rates drop and many properties add extras like free parking, dining credits and gift certificates to local businesses in order to boost business. There’s also lots to see and do inside if the cold gets to be too much. It’s easy to get around via public transportation to minimize time spent walking in the cold, and sightseeing tours are offered in covered, heated buses. The city even offers free activities like free ice-skating in Millennium Park and many of Chicago’s best museums offer free admission on select days throughout the month.
In February, Chicagoans celebrate Valentines Day like the rest of the US. Couples plan romantic evenings at candlelit restaurants, singles head to the bars with their friends, and plenty of people carryon as usual. If you plan on dining at one of the city’s best restaurants you’ll need to book in advance.
