When most people think of Detroit, they think of the metro Detroit area. And when it comes to looking for lodging, most visitors do the same, looking for hotels in Dearborn, Mt. Clemens, Troy, Sterling Heights, Royal Oak and the Downriver area. In those suburbs you’ll find all your favorite chains like Hyatt, Holiday Inn, Hilton, Marriott, Best Western, Super 8 and more – running the gamut from cheap motel to upscale hotel. Those looking for luxury often opt for the Dearborn Inn or for Birmingham’s swanky Townsend Hotel.
For those looking to stay in Downtown Detroit, there are several options as well. Aside from the casino hotels (Motor City, Greektown, and the MGM Grand), one of the nicest hotels is the newly refurbished Book Cadillac Hotel, once the tallest hotel in the world. Built in 1924, it’s on the National Register of Historic Places and recently underwent a $200 million renovation. It’s also now home to one of the city’s most celebrated new restaurants, Roast.
If bed and breakfasts are more your style, check out my personal favorite, the Inn on Ferry Street. Located on a residential street just steps from the Detroit Institute of Arts and the bars and restaurants of Midtown, it offers historical charms, huge comfortable beds and Jacuzzi tubs, free hearty breakfast, and a free shuttle that will take you anywhere within five miles.
