10/23 – Fall Harvest Festival - This all-day event will feature a haunted house and keiki costume contest, pony rides, games, and more. Details here.
There aren’t as many public Halloween events on Kauai, as most families just trick or treat in their neighborhoods. Occasionally schools, churches, and malls will also have costume contests or events. A few options are:
10/28 – 1st Annual Kauai “Boo” Ball – A Halloween costume party and dance, live music by “String Theory”. Benefit for Live Music Kauai’s youth music program. This event will be held at the Kauai Veterans Center in Lihue, 7:00 – 10:00 pm. Tickets $25. Details here.
10/29 – Nightmare on Rice Street - If you’re looking for some grown up fun, Rob’s Good Time Grille in Lihue will be hosting Halloween party this year, although details are still forthcoming. Visit their official website here.
Since the Big Island is so large geographically, your options may be a little limited for Halloween. On Hilo side, where it’s rainier, outdoor trick or treating is usually not an option, so the mall is the most popular gathering place for the keiki in their costumes. A few other events are:
10/28 & 10/29 – Obake Ghost Stories – Akiko’s Bed & Breakfast in the Wailea Village on the Hamakua Coast. Obake tales are local-style ghost stories and this event at Akiko’s will be full of chicken skin tales. Details here.
10/23 – HPA Pumpkin Patch - This family-friendly day of Halloween fun takes place in Waimea from 10am to 4pm. Free entry and tons of activities, food booths, entertainment, and more. Of course, you will also have the chance to pick your own pumpkin. Details here.
Here’s a video to give you a taste of what it was like to walk down Front Street for Halloween before the event was shut down in 2008. We’ll see what 2011 is like!
