With miles and miles of beautiful coastline and year-round swells of picturesque surf, it’s no surprise that the sport of surfing originated in Hawaii. Lately, a new variation called stand up paddle boarding has been growing in popularity. Known also as SUP or stand up paddle surfing, you’ll often see entire families out with stand up boards in the waters around the islands.
If you pick a calm location, you may even be able to see down into the water and the marine life below, similar to what you’d get to see on a kayak tour. Thrill seekers will instead search out the larger waves and actually surf them, using the paddle for control and an extra push. If you’re confident in your own ability, you may also look into SUP board rentals, either by the hour, day, or week. Stand up paddle is a great core workout, and good for all skill levels. For the best conditions, try to schedule your lesson as early in the day as possible as winds generally pick up as the day goes on.
