A happy hour in Kailua-Kona can arguably be called the happiest in the state because of the beautiful oceanfront sunset views. Here are a few places to enjoy your pupus (appetizers) and drinks as the sun slips into the sea:
Kona Brewing Company‘s brewpub in Kailua-Kona is a favorite for both locals and visitors alike. Save even more at the brewpub’s Growler Shack, which offers discounts on beer to go!
Huggos on the Rocks is known for their happy hour which goes until 6pm, but get there early if you want to snag a sunset spot. A variety of $3 pupus and drinks (try the mai tais!) can be enjoyed with your toes literally in the sand.
Don the Beachcomber in the Royal Kona Resort at the end of Alii Drive is another popular sunset happy hour hangout in Kona. Specials go from 4-6pm and the drinks are especially popular, including mai tais and other tropical favorites. There is also a separate restaurant if you prefer more than just pupus, although people often come just for the drinks!
Kona Canoe Club has a happy hour menu from 2-5pm daily featuring beer, wine, and mai tais on special, plus a selection of “bar food” appetizers like nachos, sliders, calamari strips, and tacos.
The Mixx Bistro Bar features $5 Martini specials and $10 tapas-style plates to share. Plus, Thursday nights are salsa nights!
Jessica from Kona recommends “the Billfish Bar, located poolside at the newly renovated King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Happy Hour is daily from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. — they make a potent mai tai, great draft beer specials, and have all kinds of tasty pupu specials, like Fish and Chips and Pork Quesadillas for about $5 to $6. For sports fans, there is usually some kind of game on the TVs. And walk out to the end of nearby Kailua Pier for fantastic sunsets.”
