I know May seems like a long way away. We’ve barely escaped the icy clutches of winter and it’s hard to even fathom the warm, gentle breezes of spring and the long, hot days of summer. But Memorial Day, the unofficial kick-off to the summer season, will be here before you know it, and now is the time to start planning a Hawaiian getaway for the holiday.
If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii for the long weekend, consider making it an even longer weekend. The best days to travel over Memorial Day are pretty much any days other than Friday and Monday as that’s when most people are heading into and out of town and those are the days when the airport will be most crowded and flight prices will be at their most expensive.
Instead, see if you can extend your trip by a day or two. Leave Thursday and come back on Tuesday and you may avoid the bulk of the crowds and save a bit of money on your flights.
Memorial Day weekend is a great time to find cheap flights to Hawaii. The Spring Break crowds will have gone but the families traveling on summer vacation won’t arrive for a few more weeks. With fewer crowds come lower prices, both on airfare and at hotels, and you can find cheap hotels in Kauai, Maui and the other islands for much lower than you would pay during peak times.
