Waimea Valley

Breath-taking 40 foot Waimea Falls beckons visitors to the beautiful north shore of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Waimea Valley is always a popular place for visitors. This 1,800 historical nature park offers guests a living cultural experience of Hawaii’s fascinating heritage. The park features 36 botanical gardens that are a world class treasure of Polynesian plant collections.

These botanical gardens serve as a sanctuary to 6000 very rare exotic native tropical plants displayed along a 3.5 mile self guided tour on a paved walkway. The self guided tour includes restored ancient Hawaiian archaeological sites. Story boards and plaques along the way help visitors understand by explaining the significance of each exhibit. Ample restrooms and drinking fountains provide visitor comfort during the fascinating hike.

Visitors experience exotic demonstrations of ancient Hawaiian traditions such as cliff diving. Swimming is permitted in the pool at the basin of the waterfall providing guests a unique opportunity to stand beneath the cascading falls themselves. Extra activities provide something for everyone from horseback riding to kayaking and mountain biking. The park also has a children’s play area. Guests can complete their Hawaiian cultural experience by viewing traditional hula and music performances, an important part of Hawaiian heritage.

What To Expect
Because much of this experience is hands on, be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Other important items to pack are a camera and sunscreen. Many guests bring a video camera or camcorder. A swimsuit and beach towel are also important for first hand enjoyment of the falls. Insect repellant is recommended. But if you forget, a general store just inside the park has the provisions you need.

Hours of Operation
The park is open from 9:30 AM to 5 PM daily and is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Admission Cost
General admission to the valley is $10 for adults, $5 for children between ages 4 and 12 and seniors 60 and older; Kama‘aina rates and Military rates are $6 for adults and $3 for children and seniors.
