The Hawaiian Islands are known for some of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the world. These amazing sights are scattered throughout the islands, and some are only visible from the air. These waterfalls range in size from small to large, and are located from the “Big Island” to Kauai. Here is a short list of some of the coolest to be seen.
Akaka Falls
Akaka Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is located in Akaka Falls State Park, and rises to a height of 422 feet. This beautiful waterfall is accessible during all seasons and has a short paved trail that leads to the waterfall. You will be surrounded by indigenous plants such as the torch ginger, bamboo and the bird of paradise. Follow the trail up a little further and you can see Kahuna Falls also, although the view here is less than that of Akaka Falls because of the dense greenery.
Hiilawe Falls
This waterfall is the highest waterfall in the entire state of Hawaii, towering to a staggering 1600 feet, and is located on the Big Island. You can only view Hiilawe Falls from Waipio Valley or from a helicopter, and is visible all year round. You can hike into the valley and view the Falls, but this is a long hard hike back out. The road descends 900 feet in a mile, and is one of the steepest roads in the world, so do not drive down.
Waimoku Falls
These falls are located on the island of Maui, and require quite a hike. This hike can take from 2 1/2 to 5 hours depending on how much hiking you do, it is two miles in and two miles out. On your hike you will pass the Makahiku Falls, the seven sacred pools, and a beautiful Bamboo Forrest. Waimoku Falls streams over a 400 foot lava cliff into a pool at the bottom. Follow the Pipiwai Trail to the end and here is where you’ll find these gorgeous falls.
Hanakapiai Falls
Hanakapi’ai Falls are located on the Na Pali Coast in the Hanakapi’ai Valley on the island of Kauki. To see these falls requires a difficult hike through rugged terrain, but this will be well worth it. The falls are 410 feet high, and are nestled among native plants and bamboo forests. You will have to cross the stream several times to reach the falls, so be aware of the conditions and be careful while crossing.
Pe’epe’e Falls
Pe’epe’e Falls are located on the big island of Hawaii, and it requires little effort to view these splendid falls. The flow of this waterfall is determined by the amount of rainfall in the area. There is a small pool at the bottom so you should be aware of mosquitoes. This is an amazing sight to see.
