May 5 is the day when Mexico honors its independence with festive celebrations. Las Vegas doesn’t need a reason to party, but any reason is a good reason, so it’s no surprise that Cinco de Mayo can get a little wild and crazy in Sin City.
In Las Vegas, Cinco de Mayo stretches to the next closest weekend, so it’s a rare holiday that lasts for a single day. Anywhere and everywhere in Las Vegas that is home to a Mexican restaurant is likely to be throwing their sombrero into the celebration ring. Nearly all bars and pubs offer specials on tequila and other Mexican-related beverages while restaurants often offer discounts on food and drink as well.
Though parties vary from year to year, there are a few places in Las Vegas that are a given when it comes to finding a place to party hard. Cabo Wabo Cantina in the Miracle Mile of Planet Hollywood always offers food and drink specials and also holds contests. Tacos & Tequila at Luxor Las Vegas, which has a fun vibe anyway, kicks it into even higher gear for Cinco de Mayo with celeb appearances, live mariachi entertainment, contests and drink specials. Border Grill at Mandalay Bay has a chill, classy atmosphere all year long, but stop by for the restaurant’s Cinco de Mayo celebrations for customized drink concoctions.
No margarita is too sweet or taco too big during Cinco de Mayo in Las Vegas, but keep in mind that if you want to celebrate, all laws still apply. You must be 21 to drink, and if you choose to party hard, make sure you’re with a trusted friend and you don’t drive back to your hotel. Catch a cab instead.
If you want to join in on these festivities, make sure you book your flights to Las Vegas as early as possible and secure accommodations as soon as you know you’d like to be in town.
