For many people, the ultimate comfort food is a warm, hearty breakfast meal. When that meal comes from a local cafe, served in an intimate setting and for a reasonable price, there are even more reasons to love it.
Babycakes Cafe is a relative newcomer on the Las Vegas scene, but it’s become a local favorite with its large selection of pancakes, omelets and other breakfast favorites. Pancakes, of course, are the cafe’s specialty, and come in a variety of flavors including red velvet, bacon, lemon ricotta, s’more, strawberry and blueberry as well as classic buttermilk and honey whole wheat. Perhaps the best part of ordering pancakes at Babycakes Cafe, though, is that you don’t have to overstuff yourself. Though a whole order (six pancakes) is reasonably priced at $7.00 to $9.00, depending on the type, you can keep things small with a half order, which drops a couple bucks off of your final bill.
The omelet selection is also diverse and includes selections such as a Mexican variety (with jalapenos, pepper jack cheese and sour cream) and cowboy option (with ham, peppers, mushrooms, onions and cheddar cheese) as well as build-your-own omelet menu. In addition to the pancakes, Babycakes Cafe has other breakfast specialties, including a Filipino fried rice dish, a spam scramble and a spicy huevos rancheros dish.
If you’re just looking for a standard classic breakfast, the cafe has those too. Have your eggs served with a variety of sides (bacon, hash, steak and sausage, for example), add pancakes, toast or hashbrowns and pay somewhere between $6.00 and $11.00 for a full breakfast. Crepes, benedicts, French toast and several side orders top off the breakfast menu.
In addition to breakfast, Babycakes Cafe also has a lunch menu (though it’s not nearly as extensive as the early-morning meal selection). Choose from a variety of salads, burgers and warm or cold sandwiches to fill the afternoon void. The lunch menu at Babycakes does not offer any house specialties, but prices are reasonable. For example, burgers range from $7.00 to $10.00 and come with fresh toppings as well as a side of potatoes. The sandwiches (again $7.00 to $10.00) are all prepared fresh and made to order and come with a choice of fries, salad or fruit. Patrons choose their type of cheese and bread.
The cafe itself is relatively small, with perhaps a dozen tables inside. It is clean and comfortable, and waitstaff is attentive and efficient. Food is hot and fresh when it arrives at the table.
Babycakes Cafe is open 7:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Located in a complex at 2400 North Buffalo Drive, it’s fairly hidden from the road and you’ll need a rental car to reach it. A lot of businesses have come and gone in this part of town. For the sake of pancakes everywhere, let’s hope this is one cafe that has staying power.
