Northern California's Henry W. Coe State Park — located in Santa Clara and Stanislaus counties — has always had allure, but now there's vast new territory waiting to be explored.
The opening of the Dowdy Ranch park entrance improves access to the park's eastern half, including the mythical Orestimba Wilderness. Trails, lakes, and valleys give backpackers, equestrians, fishermen, and mountain bikers a chance to pioneer new ground that's rugged, secluded, and wonderfully pristine.
Hikers can follow golden eagles to Burra Burra Peak, while fishermen will find no shortage of bass at Mustang Pond or Jack-rabbit Lake.
INFO: Dowdy Ranch park entrance: Sat–Sun and holidays May–mid-Oct; $5 per vehicle; 408/779-2728.
