After decades of decline, canoe culture is cresting again. The ultimate canoe confab takes place each May in Lahaina, Maui, at the International Festival of Canoes. During the two-week event, master builders from seven nations each carve a vessel in their indigenous style. Attendees can help christen the new vessels at the May 29, 2004, closing launch ceremony.
