Accommodation in Vancouver, as in many major cities around the world, can be pricey. Luxury hotels like the Fairmont, Four Seasons, and Westin Grand charge upwards of $250 per night.
But you don’t have to bust your budget on posh accommodations; there are plenty of mid-range and budget options to choose from as well. Reputable budget chains like Ramada, Howard Johnson, Best Western, Holiday Inn and Days Inn all have locations in the city. And if your needs are a little more basic–just a clean, comfy bed in a good location–you may be surprised by the number of options available to you.
If you’re coming into town for the TBEX conference (or for any event located downtown or at the Convention Centre) and your biggest concern is ultra-cheap accommodation, your choices are limited to hostels or a few very basic hotels. While the hotels listed below are a good value, they don’t offer much more than place to lay your head for the night, and with shared bathrooms, some are more like hostels. Don’t come expecting too much, and you won’t be disappointed.
The Granville Grand is a budget hotel near trendy Yaletown, close to many bars and restaurants, a short walk to ferries to Granville Island, and about 10 blocks from the Convention Centre. Dorm bunks start at $29 per bed, private singles start at $49 per night, and doubles range from $69-$79 per night. All bathrooms are shared, and amenities include free wi-fi and laundry and kitchen facilities.
The Budget Inn Patricia Hotel is certainly on the no-frills end of the amenity spectrum, but it does offer free wi-fi and free breakfast (in summer). It’s located on the tattered edge of the downtown core, one block from Chinatown, and close to Gastown and Granville Island. “Basic” rooms, which are quite small and offer a double bed and shower, start at $49 per room. Those who want more space can opt for the quad with two queen beds and a full bath for $102.
The St. Clair Hotel, built in 1911, is located in the heart of downtown on Richards Street at Dunsmuir Street, a short walk to the Convention Centre, Chinatown, and Granville Street. Bunk beds start at $44 and double rooms start at $49 per night. Wi-fi access is free and guest have access to limited kitchen facilities (a refrigerator and microwave).
