Accommodation in this diverse and multicultural city is as varied and as different as the people that live within it. There is something to suit any type of travelers needs in this city. Even the up-market accommodation is still reasonably affordable, making it a great city to spend a little and get a lot.
DowntownThe area known as Downtown of Sao Paulo is often referred to as the birthplace of the city. It is the lungs of the city where all the best events happen and the best places to eat and entertain are located.
It can be risky to walk around alone at night, apart from the day of Virada Cultural, the annual event where over 50 stages line the streets for 24 hours of entertainment. There are plenty of guesthouses, B&Bs and a huge amount of cheap hotels in this area. To be safe, stay in Praca da Republica.
West
The west of Sao Paulo is known to be one of the most vibrant areas of the city. Free festivals, cultural shows and ticketed festivals are held here annually. It is also the home of University of Sao Paulo (USP), and with over 80,000 students studying here the area is young and alive. Yet there are still plenty of historical attractions in this area too.
As one of the most popular and safest areas of the city for accommodation, there is plenty to choose from. This is where the new hostel scene can be found, ideal for travelers wanting cheap reliable accommodation. There are also a huge range and variety of restaurants and shops here too.
South
As the largest area of the city, this is probably also the busiest in terms of tourism and events, from Forumla 1 to up-market restaurants, clubs and bars. There are also plenty of residential and commercial areas. Itaim Bibi and Jardins are also nice neighborhoods to stay in being close to the nightlife and best restaurants in the city.
Berrini / Morumbi are great areas to stay in for business travelers and tourists. There are plenty of up-market hotels, with business facilities and five star hotels. There is plenty going on in the evenings here making it a great place to stay if you want a bit of life after dark.
North
Head further north of the city to reach sprawling hills perfect for hiking. This is also where many locals have their summer homes and the Carnival parades fill the streets.
This area is perfect for a more residential stay, away from the center of the city. If you like to get out and see nature, this is a great area to be settled in.
South east
Previously a working class industrial area, the south east of Sao Paulo is now a major tourist attraction area with plenty to see such as Sao Paulo Zoo and Ipiranga Park, which houses many museums and monuments.
Types of accommodation here are again varied from apartments near to the city center and a whole range of hotels. Stay here to be close to many of the attractions and see some greenery near the parks.
