As the largest city within the huge country of Brazil, there is certainly no shortage of sights and activities. Sao Paulo has the culturally old, large parks full of monuments and museums, huge metal sky scrapers, cathedrals and plenty of modern architecture. It is a bustling city with so much on offer, so much so that Paulistanos (locals) famously would not live anywhere else. Explore art house cinemas, theatres, restaurants and museums.
Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo (MASP)This museum is home to Sao Paulo’s most extensive collection of western art, as well as Brazilian, African and Asian art. Designed by Lina Bo Bardi, the modernist building was completed in 1968. The huge concrete and glass building is almost incased by large red concrete red beams, making it stand out and is considered a landmark of the city. Located on Paulista Avenue, the building represents modern Brazilian architecture. The museum is also the first Brazilian museum showcasing World War II art.
Julio Prestes Cultural Centre – Sala Sao Paulo
Completed in 1938 during the urbanization of the city, the building was designed by Chistiano Stocklel das Neves in 1925. This period in Sao Paulo was fueled by the coffee boom and the new railway, meaning the city rapidly grew. The Cultural Center is located right in the heart of the city, near the Musuem of Sacred Art and is listed as a historic site. Now, it is the home of Sao Paulo’s Symphony Orchestra where it hosts many concerts and events.
Ibirapuera Park
This is the most famous park in the whole of Sao Paulo, located in the south of the city. This area is often called referred to as a hidden gem in the busy metropolis. Plenty of green space sits inside the park, along with museums, monuments and cultural activities. Stroll through the park for a relaxing experience inside the city, where nature has been preserved, such as a large patch of Atlantic rainforest. It also houses one of the largest swimming pools of Latin America, along with sport areas. The nearest station is the station Brigadeiro metro station.
MUBE – Musseu Brasileiro da Escultura
Inside a huge concrete building, designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha is Musseu Brasileiro da Escultura. Built below street level, this building is spread out over 7,000 square meters and is surrounded by the gardens of Jardim Europa and the luxurious neighborhoods in the south of the city. Inside, the museum displays sculpture and various forms or intriguing art. Exhibitions vary and often feature internationally acclaimed artists as well as lesser known local artists trying to break into the scene.
Pinacoteca do Estado
As one of the most important art museums in the whole of Brazil, this is a must visit for any avid art lover, even on a sunny day. Opposite Estacao du Luz metro station, is Pinacoteca do Estado which is full of artistic culture. Indulge in the romantics, learn about the Renaissance period and spot your favorite artist’s paintings, photograph collections and sculptures. There are also temporary exhibitions.
Praia do Tombo (outside São Paulo city)
If beaches really are your thing, then do not miss out on Praia do Tombo, famed for being one of the best beaches in the whole of Sao Paulo. Forget about the sandy shores of famous Rio de Janeiro and head 70 kilometers from the center of Sao Paulo city for this blue flag beach. Its award means it is recognized for its safety and cleanliness, let alone its beauty – making it really worth the distance.
